In what could become one of the most closely-watched sagas of the season, Vinicius Jr. has hit pause on contract renewal talks with Real Madrid — and it’s all about the money.

According to Cadena SER, the Brazilian superstar is standing firm on his request to become the highest-paid player at the club, aiming to match Kylian Mbappé’s salary — even though earlier negotiations had already reached a reported €20 million plus add-ons.

Club made the first move — now it’s Vini’s turn

Real Madrid had been proactive in trying to extend Vinicius’ deal even further, despite his current contract running until 2027. Talks were progressing smoothly until Vini’s camp brought forward a new demand: parity with Mbappé, who just arrived as the marquee name in Madrid’s next-generation project.

Vini’s entourage maintains that there was no misunderstanding. They believe the next move must come from the club — especially now that the parameters have changed.

No drama — just business

Here’s the key: there’s no tension between the parties. This isn’t a power struggle. It’s a strategic pause.

Real Madrid respect Vinicius’ stance. And Vinicius remains fully committed to the club’s future — on the pitch, with the fans, and in the dressing room. With Xabi Alonso preparing to lead the club into a new era, there’s every chance Vini will be central to the project — and to the silverware chase.

Real Madrid know what they have

Vinicius is more than just a footballer. He’s a global icon, a fan-favorite, and a key pillar in Madrid’s commercial and footballing model. The club is well aware of that. They’re not sweating this delay — and they’re certainly not rushing it either.

Don’t expect another contract offer soon. The expectation is that discussions will naturally resume — possibly closer to 2026 — once both sides are aligned on value, role, and timing.

Until then, Madridistas can relax: Vinicius isn’t going anywhere. He’s here to win. And if he does, don’t be surprised if that salary figure starts to look a lot more justifiable.
