Former Real Madrid Defender Warns Vinicius Jr. Over Contract Standoff: “These Fights Are Poisonous”
Vinicius Jr.’s contract situation at Real Madrid is starting to stir headlines — and not for the right reasons. Amid reported tension between the Brazilian star and the club over his new deal, former Madrid defender Rafael Alkorta has offered a stark warning: don’t play hardball with Florentino Perez.
“Trying to squeeze Florentino can go wrong”
Speaking to Cadena SER, Alkorta didn’t mince words as he weighed in on the ongoing renewal saga. According to multiple reports, Vinicius is asking for a significantly higher net salary than what Madrid are willing to offer. That disagreement has stalled progress, and Alkorta believes the winger is treading dangerous ground.
“Trying to squeeze Florentino Perez can go wrong. Let’s remember what happened with Ramos,” Alkorta said.
It’s a sharp reference to the infamous Sergio Ramos episode — where the former captain rejected a renewal offer, only to return months later wanting to accept it. By then, the offer had expired, and Ramos was shown the door.
Alkorta hinted that Vinicius could face a similar fate if he doesn’t proceed carefully.
A tough year on and off the pitch
Alkorta also touched on Vinicius’ performances, suggesting his struggles last season shouldn’t be ignored — especially after Kylian Mbappe’s arrival.
“Since they took him off the left wing, I haven’t seen him well. Playing with Mbappe has cost him,” Alkorta added. “They are young and ambitious, but the environment must advise them better.”
He also criticized the changes made to accommodate both stars, pointing out that the tactical experiment failed to deliver results.
“Last year, modifying the scheme for him and Mbappe to play didn’t work at all. If you focus on performing at your best, the rest will come by itself. Madrid always rewards those who prove their worth on the pitch.”
“These fights are poisonous”
In his closing remarks, Alkorta reinforced just how unforgiving the Real Madrid hierarchy can be when it comes to contract stand-offs.
“These fights are poisonous. Florentino is affectionate, but he does not hesitate to make tough decisions. If [Vinicius] has a great season, he will have the strength to negotiate.”
In short — perform first, negotiate later. That’s the Madrid way.
