Alonso narrows Modric successor race to Güler and Ceballos — but both have something to prove
Replacing Luka Modric isn’t just a tactical challenge for Xabi Alonso—it’s a test of identity. With both Modric and Kroos now gone, Real Madrid’s midfield enters a new era, and Alonso is already moving to define who leads it.
According to Real Madrid Confidencial, the new manager has identified two internal candidates to take over the creative reins: Arda Güler and Dani Ceballos. Both bring different strengths. Neither is the finished product.
Güler has the edge—for now
Arda Güler appeared to be Alonso’s early pick. He was handed key minutes at the Club World Cup, even starting some matches. But the 4-0 defeat to PSG exposed serious limitations. Güler was overwhelmed in midfield and struggled to impose himself physically against elite opposition.
The Turkish playmaker has since dedicated his summer to physical training, knowing that if he can’t raise his level off the ball, his talent on it won’t matter. Alonso still sees him as a long-term asset, but the question is whether he’s ready to lead a midfield this season—or just contribute in moments.
Ceballos still in the conversation
Dani Ceballos, meanwhile, enters pre-season with experience on his side. A move to Real Betis was close, but didn’t happen due to financial constraints. He’s staying at Madrid—for now—and Alonso hasn’t ruled him out.
Ceballos didn’t start a single game under Alonso at the Club World Cup. But he understands the system, knows the expectations, and has the positional maturity Güler is still developing. He’s not the flashiest option, but he might be the safer one.
What comes next
Pre-season will serve as a live audition. Alonso wants a clear answer before the season begins, and for now, the choice is between two players with very different profiles—and very different career trajectories.
The role Modric leaves behind isn’t just about passing or press resistance. It’s about leadership, control, and rising in big moments. Whether Güler grows into it or Ceballos grabs his last chance could shape Madrid’s midfield for the next five years.
