Real Madrid Willing to Waive Transfer Fee to Offload Ferland Mendy – Report
Ferland Mendy’s time at Real Madrid appears to be nearing an unceremonious end. With Xabi Alonso beginning to shape the squad in his image, the French left-back has become one of the early casualties of the new manager’s plans.
According to a report from Defensa Central, Real Madrid are now prepared to let Mendy leave for free, if that’s what it takes to get him off the books this summer.
Not in Xabi’s Plans
Xabi Alonso has already made it clear that Álvaro Carreras and Fran García will be his two primary left-backs going into the 2025/26 season. That leaves Mendy — once a reliable starter under Zidane and Ancelotti — completely out of the rotation.
Internally, Madrid have accepted that Mendy’s high salary and inconsistent availability make him difficult to move on traditional transfer terms. As a result, the club is now willing to waive the transfer fee altogether in order to fast-track his departure.
Mendy doesn’t want to leave
The problem? Mendy has no intention of leaving just yet.
The 29-year-old still has a contract until 2028 and is reportedly comfortable in Madrid, even if he knows Alonso has no plans for him. There’s been no formal transfer request from the player’s side, and he appears willing to see out his deal — or at least force the club into a better exit settlement.
Madrid, for their part, had initially hoped to earn a small fee from his sale. But given the lack of interest and the financial burden of keeping him, they’re now prepared to cut their losses — even if it means letting him go for nothing.
Could a loan or termination be next?
If the current standoff continues into late August, club officials may even consider a mutual contract termination or a subsidized loan deal — a drastic step for a club known for strict financial discipline around departures.
In short, the ball is firmly in Mendy’s court. Either he accepts a move now and finds regular football elsewhere, or he risks spending a full season on the fringes, with no guarantees of minutes under Alonso.
