Real Madrid open to Antonio Rüdiger exit amid Saudi interest
As Real Madrid begin shaping their squad for the 2025/26 season, the future of key veterans is once again under the spotlight. With Luka Modrić and Lucas Vázquez already bidding farewell this summer, attention has now turned to the next group of players in the final year of their contracts — including Antonio Rüdiger.
According to a report from AS, Real Madrid are not ruling out the sale of Rüdiger if a suitable offer arrives during this window. The 31-year-old centre-back has attracted interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, and given his contract situation, age, and injury history, the club is considering all options.
A mixed 2024/25 season
Rüdiger’s importance to Real Madrid over the past few seasons cannot be overstated. Since arriving on a free transfer from Chelsea, he has brought intensity, leadership, and a warrior-like mentality to the backline.
However, the 2024/25 campaign proved physically taxing. Rüdiger reportedly played through persistent knee pain, later diagnosed as early-stage osteoarthritis, before eventually undergoing surgery near the end of the season. Although he returned in time for the FIFA Club World Cup, he didn’t quite look himself — a step slower, and visibly lacking sharpness.
Given the physical toll and the fact that he’s now over 30, Rüdiger is only eligible for a year-by-year renewal under Madrid’s veteran policy. That, combined with his high wages, puts the club in a difficult position.
Internal competition and future planning
Real Madrid are not short of options in central defense. Éder Militão and David Alaba remain part of the setup, while Dean Huijsen — highly rated within the club — has returned from loan. On top of that, reports have emerged about potential interest in Ibrahima Konaté from Liverpool, who could be signed earlier than expected if the right opportunity arises.
This growing depth, along with long-term planning and financial considerations, means that a Rüdiger exit this summer is not off the table. A strong offer from Saudi Arabia could tempt both player and club to part ways.
What comes next?
For now, Rüdiger remains a Real Madrid player — and if he stays, he’ll fight for his place like he always has. But the door is open. And if the right proposal lands on the table, this summer could mark the end of Rüdiger’s time at the Bernabéu.
